Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: shuttle bus, private car or day trip

By Kevin · Published · 10 min read

Ha Long Bay is about 170 km from Hanoi, two and a half hours on the expressway. Most visitors take the shuttle bus run by their cruise company, which collects them in the Old Quarter and drops them at the right pier for about US$15 to US$25 each way. A private car suits families and groups, and the seaplane no longer flies. Here is every option with 2026 prices, which pier you need, and whether a day trip is worth it.

The short version

Distance: about 170 km and 2.5 hours from the Old Quarter to the piers at Tuan Chau and Bai Chay.

Easiest: your cruise's shuttle bus, about US$15 to US$25 each way, Old Quarter pickup around 8am.

Most comfortable: a private car, about US$60 to US$95 one way; a 9-seat van about US$110 to US$135.

No longer an option: the seaplane, which stopped in spring 2026. There is no practical train.

Day trip: 12 to 13 hours, about US$55 to US$120. One night on a boat is much better.

How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?

About 170 km from Hanoi's Old Quarter to the main cruise piers, which takes about 2.5 hours on the expressways via Hai Phong, or up to 3 hours with hotel pickups and a rest stop. Which pier you go to depends on your boat, and that matters more than most people expect.

What is the best way to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?

Take the shuttle your cruise company offers, unless there are three or more of you, in which case a private car costs about the same per person and lets you leave when you want.

Prices are typical ranges from cruise companies, bus operators and booking sites in October 2026, at about 26,000 dong to the dollar.

How does the cruise shuttle bus work?

Almost every cruise sells a shuttle that collects you from your hotel or a meeting point in the Old Quarter between about 7:30 and 8:30am, stops once on the way, and reaches the pier in time for boarding around noon. On the way back it leaves the pier after the boat docks, around 11am to noon, and you are in Hanoi by mid-afternoon.

Is a private car worth it?

Yes for families, groups and anyone landing at Noi Bai who wants to go straight to the boat. At about US$60 to US$95 a car, it costs much the same per person as the shuttle for three or four people.

A private car leaves when you want, stops when the children need a break, and takes you to the exact pier. It is also the only sensible way to combine places: Ninh Binh to Ha Long is about 3.5 to 4 hours by car, so you can go from the karsts on land to the karsts at sea without going back to Hanoi. See Hanoi to Ninh Binh for that leg. Under the 2026 road safety law, children under 10 and under 1.35 m can't sit in the front row, so ask for child seats when you book. Our family holiday guide explains the rule.

Can you still fly or take the train to Ha Long Bay?

No. The Hai Au seaplane service over Ha Long stopped in spring 2026, so ignore older articles that suggest flying in. There is no practical passenger train either. The nearest airport is Van Don, about an hour from the Bai Chay piers, which has a small number of domestic flights; it only makes sense if you are flying in from the south and going straight to a Bai Tu Long Bay cruise.

Is a day trip from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay worth it?

Only if one day is all you have. A day trip lasts 12 to 13 hours and costs about US$55 to US$120, but you spend 4.5 to 5 hours on the road for about 4 hours on the water.

A typical day leaves Hanoi around 8am, boards a day boat at Bai Chay or Tuan Chau before noon, serves lunch on board, stops at Sung Sot cave and Ti Top island, and adds kayaking or a bamboo boat through Luon cave, then drives back, reaching Hanoi around 8pm. The bay entrance ticket, about 250,000 to 290,000 dong per person per route in 2026, is normally included.

One night on a cruise changes the trip. You are on the water from noon one day to late morning the next, with sunset, a quiet bay after the day boats leave, tai chi on deck at dawn and kayaking before breakfast. Costs, cabins and which bay to choose are in our Ha Long Bay cruise guide. If you can only spare one day, go private: hire a car, leave Hanoi at 6:30am and you reach the water before the crowds.

Where can you play pickleball near Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long city has a few courts, including outdoor courts on the waterfront with karsts behind them, and Bai Chay has Titans Pickleball, with three outdoor courts near the seafront. Play the morning before you board or after you dock.

Cruises board around noon, so a night in Ha Long city before the cruise gives you a 6am game, breakfast and a ten-minute drive to the pier. Coming back, boats dock around 10:30 to 11am; book a court for noon only in the cooler months. The other option is to play in Hanoi: the city's clubs fill up in the evening, so a game the night before you leave is easy. Pickleball in Hanoi lists the courts, and our cruise guide has a section on playing before and after the boat.

Hanoi to Ha Long Bay: FAQ

How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?

About 170 km from Hanoi's Old Quarter to the cruise piers at Tuan Chau and Bai Chay. On the expressways the drive takes about 2.5 hours, or up to 3 hours with pickups and a rest stop. Lan Ha Bay cruises leave from Cat Hai in Hai Phong, about 2 hours away.

What is the best way to get from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?

For most people, the shuttle bus sold by your cruise company: it collects you in the Old Quarter around 8am and drops you at the right pier for about US$15 to US$25 each way. A private car costs about US$60 to US$95 one way and suits families and groups of three or more.

Is there a train or seaplane from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay?

Not in any practical sense. There is no convenient passenger train, and the Hai Au seaplane service over Ha Long stopped in spring 2026. Road is the only realistic way, and the expressways make it quick.

Is a Ha Long Bay day trip from Hanoi worth it?

Only if you have no other choice. A day trip lasts about 12 to 13 hours, with 4.5 to 5 hours of driving and about 4 hours on the water, and costs roughly US$55 to US$120. One night on a cruise costs more, but you see sunset and sunrise on the bay. Our Ha Long Bay cruise guide compares one night with two.

How much is the Ha Long Bay entrance ticket?

About 250,000 to 290,000 dong per person per route in 2026, depending on the route and the season, and it is almost always included in cruise and day-trip prices. If you book a boat yourself at the Ha Long International Cruise Port, you pay the ticket and the boat separately.

Can you get from Noi Bai Airport straight to Ha Long Bay?

Yes. Noi Bai is about 2.5 to 3 hours from the piers by car, so a private transfer straight from the airport works if you land by mid-morning. Most cruises board between 11:30am and 1pm, so with a later flight, stay a night in Hanoi first.

The bottom line

Hanoi to Ha Long Bay is an easy two and a half hours on the expressway: take your cruise's shuttle bus, or a private car if there are three or more of you. Skip the day trip if you possibly can, stay at least one night on the water, and check which pier your boat uses before you book transport. Then choose your boat with our Ha Long Bay cruise guide, or compare Ha Long Bay with the Ha Giang Loop.
