How does the Hanoi to Ninh Binh train work?
Trains on the main north-south line leave Hanoi Station, on Le Duan Street, several times a day and reach Ninh Binh in about 2 hours 10 to 2 hours 20 minutes. Soft seats cost roughly 100,000 to 270,000 dong, about US$4 to US$10, depending on the train and the date.
- Which train: in the October 2026 timetable the 6am departure (SE7) arrives a little after 8am, which is ideal. There are more departures through the day, but the late-evening trains arrive near midnight. Timetables change, so check the day you travel.
- Where to book: on the Vietnam Railways site, dsvn.vn, or a licensed agent. Book a few days ahead for weekends and holidays, when soft seats sell out.
- Which seat: an air-conditioned soft seat (ngoi mem dieu hoa) is fine for two hours. You don't need a sleeper berth for this leg.
- The view: the first hour is suburbs; the last half hour runs past rice fields and the first karsts. Sit on the right-hand side going south.
- At the other end: Ninh Binh station is in town, about 7 km from Tam Coc and from the Trang An pier. A Grab or Xanh SM car costs around 100,000 to 150,000 dong.
One more reason to like the train: Ninh Binh is on the main line, so you can leave the same way you came, carrying on south. The sleeper trains to Hue stop in Ninh Binh; see Hanoi to Hue by sleeper train, and our domestic flights vs trains guide for the bigger picture.
Is the limousine van a good option?
Yes, for most people it is the easiest choice. These are 9 to 11-seat vans with reclining leather seats, run by private companies, and most collect you from your hotel or a nearby street in central Hanoi. The fare is 170,000 to 250,000 dong a person depending on the company and how far into Ninh Binh you go; Tam Coc and Trang An cost a little more than the city.
- Book through your hotel, the company's Zalo number or an app such as Vexere, a day ahead.
- Pickup windows are loose. The van may collect five other people first, so the 2-hour drive can take 2.5 hours.
- Luggage: one suitcase and a paddle bag each is fine. Two big cases each is not.
- Confirm the drop-off by name: "Tam Coc" covers several kilometres of rice fields.
When is a private car worth it?
When there are three or four of you, when you carry paddles and luggage, or when you want to stop on the way. At about 1.2 to 2 million dong a car one way, a private car for four costs roughly the same per person as the limousine. A day with the driver waiting, for a day trip, usually costs 2 to 3 million dong. Larger 16-seat vans suit a club group.
The other advantage is control. You leave when you want, the driver waits while you play or look around, and you can take the old road through the villages instead of the expressway. On our trips we often stop at Quang Phu Cau, a village where families still make incense by hand, about an hour south of Hanoi.
Don't ride a motorbike there unless you hold a licence valid in Vietnam and are used to Vietnamese traffic. Most travel insurance won't pay out otherwise, and the national highway is full of trucks.
Can you play pickleball on the way to Ninh Binh?
Yes. Sun Sports City in Phu Ly, about 60 km from Hanoi and just off the expressway, opened on 30 May 2026 with 41 covered pickleball courts, one of the largest pickleball centres in Vietnam. It is a 22-hectare sports park by Sun Group, with a fully roofed show court seating more than 500, so a game there splits the drive neatly in two.
The other option is to play in Hanoi first. Hanoi's clubs fill up in the evening, so mornings are quiet and cheap: book a court from 7 to 8:30am, shower, leave at 9:30 after the rush, and you are in Ninh Binh for lunch. Pickleball in Hanoi lists the courts, and if you want a ready-made game, we run mornings playing with locals in Hanoi. Ninh Binh has its own early courts too; see things to do in Ninh Binh.
Hanoi to Ninh Binh, with the driver and the courts sorted

See the Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long tripIs a day trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh worth it?
It is worth it if you only have one free day, but it is a long one: you leave around 7:30am, get back about 7pm, and spend four to five hours of it on the road. Shared day tours sold in the Old Quarter usually cost US$40 to US$80 and include one boat trip, at Trang An or Tam Coc, plus Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh, and a buffet lunch.
The catch is timing. Every day tour reaches the boat piers between 10am and 11am, so you join the longest queues of the day at the hottest hour. Staying one or two nights lets you be on the water at 7:30am, climb Hang Mua at sunset and play in the cool of the morning. If a day trip is all you have, hire a car and leave Hanoi at 6am instead.
How do you get from Ninh Binh to your next stop?
Ninh Binh sits between Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Pu Luong and the main railway south, so it is easy to leave without going back to Hanoi.
- To Ha Long Bay: about 3.5 to 4 hours by car to the cruise piers. Most cruises collect from Hanoi, but many will pick up in Ninh Binh for a fee. See our Ha Long Bay cruise guide and Ha Long Bay or Cat Ba.
- To Hue, Da Nang and the south: board the sleeper train at Ninh Binh station.
- To Pu Luong: about 3 to 3.5 hours by car, west into the hills.
- To Noi Bai Airport: about 2.5 hours by car. Allow plenty of time for a flight. Arriving in Hanoi first? We can meet you at Noi Bai.
