The best things to do in Ninh Binh are on the water: a rowboat trip through the caves of Trang An or Tam Coc, then the 500-step climb up Hang Mua for the view over both. Add the old capital at Hoa Lu, the giant Bai Dinh pagoda and an early game of pickleball, and two nights is about right. Here is what each place is like, what the tickets cost in 2026, and how to fit it together.
The short version
Do first: the Trang An boat trip (300,000 dong, 2 to 3 hours), then Hang Mua at sunset (150,000 dong, about 500 steps).
Then: Tam Coc by boat or bicycle, Hoa Lu ancient capital (20,000 dong), Bai Dinh pagoda (free, buggy 150,000 dong return).
Time: two nights. A day trip from Hanoi spends four to five hours on the road.
Best months: March to April, late May to early June for golden rice at Tam Coc, and September to November.
Pickleball: local courts in Ninh Binh city from 5am, and 41 covered courts at Sun Sports City in Phu Ly, opened May 2026.
Where is Ninh Binh, and why go?
Ninh Binh is about 95 km south of Hanoi, roughly two hours by road or rail, and it is the easiest place in Vietnam to see karst mountains from a small boat. The Trang An Landscape Complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. Where Ha Long Bay has limestone islands in the sea, Ninh Binh has the same towers standing in rice fields, with rivers running through caves under them.
One thing that confuses people using newer maps: since July 2025, Ninh Binh province also takes in the former Ha Nam and Nam Dinh provinces, and the old Ninh Binh city now appears as wards such as Hoa Lu. The sights haven't moved. When people say "Ninh Binh" they still mean the area around Trang An, Tam Coc and Hoa Lu.
What are the best things to do in Ninh Binh?
The top three are the Trang An boat trip, the climb up Hang Mua and a slow afternoon in Tam Coc. After those, choose by interest: history at Hoa Lu, Buddhism on a huge scale at Bai Dinh, or wildlife at Van Long and Cuc Phuong.
| Place | What you do | Adult ticket (2026) | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trang An | Rowboat through caves and temples | 300,000 dong (about US$11.50), boat included | 2 to 3 hours |
| Tam Coc | Rowboat through three caves and rice fields | 250,000 dong; 350,000 with the shuttle to Bich Dong | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Hang Mua | Climb about 500 steps to a viewpoint | 150,000 dong | 1.5 hours |
| Hoa Lu ancient capital | Temples of the first kings | 20,000 dong | 1 hour |
| Bai Dinh pagoda | One of Vietnam's largest temple complexes | Free; electric buggy 150,000 dong return | 2 to 3 hours |
| Hoa Lu old town | Evening walk, lantern boats | Free; lantern boat 100,000 dong | 1 to 2 hours |
| Van Long | Bamboo boat on a quiet wetland | 100,000 dong | 1.5 hours |
| Thung Nham | Bird park, birds return at dusk | 150,000 dong | 2 hours |
| Cuc Phuong National Park | Forest walks, primate rescue centre | 60,000 dong, plus 80,000 for the primate centre | Half a day |
Prices are from the Trang An management board's published list as of October 2026. Children between 1 m and 1.3 m pay roughly half at most sites, and children under 1 m go free. Older guides still quote 250,000 dong for Trang An and 100,000 for Hang Mua; both went up.
Trang An or Tam Coc: which boat trip should you do?
If you only do one, do Trang An. It is longer, goes through more caves, and the wide, still river feels calmer than Tam Coc's narrower channel. Tam Coc wins in late May and early June, when the rice along the river turns gold.
At Trang An you choose one of three routes at the ticket desk. Each mixes caves, some low enough that you duck flat, with small temples on islands where the boat stops. A local rower, usually a woman from one of the villages, rows the whole way, so allow 2 to 3 hours. Boats take up to four or five people.
Tam Coc means "three caves", and that is the trip: an out-and-back of about 1.5 to 2 hours through Hang Ca, Hang Hai and Hang Ba, with rice fields on both sides. Two things to know. Vendor boats wait at the turnaround to sell drinks "for your rower" at high prices; you can say no. And rowers here expect a tip. Around 50,000 dong is fine, more if they were good company.
Go early. Day tours from Hanoi reach both piers around 10am to 11am, and by noon there are queues. A boat at 7:30am is quiet, cool and the light on the water is better for photos.
Is Hang Mua worth the climb?
Yes, it is the best view in Ninh Binh: from the top you look straight down on the Tam Coc river winding between the karsts. It is about 500 stone steps, steep in places, and takes most people 20 to 30 minutes up.
A stone dragon runs along the ridge at the top, and the steps are narrow, so it gets slow when busy. Go at opening time or for the last hour before sunset, carry water, and wear shoes with grip rather than flip-flops. In summer there is a lotus pond at the bottom. The ticket is 150,000 dong as of October 2026. If knees are a worry, the view from the first platform, about a third of the way up, is still very good.
What else is worth seeing in Ninh Binh?
For a second day, pick two of these: Hoa Lu for history, Bai Dinh for scale, Van Long for quiet, or Cuc Phuong for forest. Trying to do all of them in one day is how people leave Ninh Binh tired instead of rested.
Hoa Lu ancient capital
Hoa Lu was Vietnam's capital from 968 to 1010, before the court moved to what is now Hanoi. Today you visit two temples, to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh, set between karsts. It is small, cheap at 20,000 dong, and easy to combine with Trang An, which is next door.
Bai Dinh pagoda
Bai Dinh is huge: halls of giant bronze Buddhas, a long corridor lined with hundreds of stone arhat statues, and a tall stupa. Most of it was built in the last twenty years, so go for the scale rather than age; the small original pagoda up the hill is the old part. Entry is free, but the electric buggy from the gate costs 150,000 dong return, and you will want it. From the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, which is 11 February in 2027, the pagoda festival brings very big crowds for weeks.
Van Long nature reserve
If Tam Coc feels busy, Van Long is the answer: a wetland where you sit in a flat bamboo boat for about an hour and a half, with almost no other boats. It is home to the rare Delacour's langur, though you need luck and good eyes to see one. The ticket is 100,000 dong.
Thung Nham bird park
Thousands of storks and herons fly back to roost here in the late afternoon. Arrive by 4pm and take a boat out to the bird island. It costs 150,000 dong and is a good pick with children.
Cuc Phuong National Park
Vietnam's first national park, opened in 1962, is about 45 km from Ninh Binh city. It has forest trails, a thousand-year-old tree and the Endangered Primate Rescue Center, where you can see langurs and gibbons up close. Allow half a day; entry is 60,000 dong, plus 80,000 for the primate centre.
Phat Diem cathedral
About 30 km southeast, this cathedral was built from stone and ironwood between 1875 and 1899, and looks like a Vietnamese temple from the outside. Entry is free. It is worth the detour if you like architecture or are heading to the coast.
What is there to do in Ninh Binh at night?
Not much nightlife, and that is the point. The best evening is a walk through the Hoa Lu old town and a lantern boat on Ky Lan Lake, then dinner in Tam Coc. The old town is free to enter, and the lantern boat costs 100,000 dong a person. In Tam Coc the main street has cafes, small bars and restaurants serving the two local dishes: mountain goat, and com chay, crispy rice from the bottom of the pot. Our what to eat in Vietnam guide covers the rest.
What can you do in Ninh Binh with kids?
Ninh Binh works well for families: boat trips with no walking, bikes on flat lanes, birds at Thung Nham and animals at Cuc Phuong. Children under 1 m go free on most boats and children up to 1.3 m pay about half.
- Trang An by boat. Life jackets are provided; ducking through low caves is the bit kids remember.
- Bicycles around Tam Coc. The lanes through the rice fields are flat and quiet before 9am.
- Thung Nham. The bird island, plus a swimming pool (100,000 dong for adults, 50,000 for children).
- Cuc Phuong. The primate centre is a better animal experience than any zoo.
- Sun World Ha Nam water park in Phu Ly, now part of Ninh Binh province, for a hot afternoon.
Skip the full Hang Mua climb with small children in the midday heat.
Where can you play pickleball in Ninh Binh?
Ninh Binh city has a handful of local courts, open from around 5am, where an hour's court hire costs less than in Hanoi. For a bigger set-up, Sun Sports City in Phu Ly, 35 to 45 minutes north, opened on 30 May 2026 with 41 covered pickleball courts.
The local courts are where Ninh Binh plays before work, and local listings put court hire at around 80,000 to 180,000 dong an hour, roughly US$3 to US$7 for the court. Sun Sports City is a 22-hectare sports park built by Sun Group, with a fully roofed show court and seating for more than 500. It is on the expressway from Hanoi, so it also works as a stop on the drive down; our Hanoi to Ninh Binh guide explains how.
The plan that works best: play from 6 to 7:30am, shower, and be on a boat by 8:30, an hour or two before the day tours arrive. In summer that is not optional; read playing pickleball in the heat. If you are coming from Hanoi, get a game there first: where to play in Hanoi lists the courts.
Ninh Binh with the courts already booked
Our 8-day Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long trip spends two nights in a homestay below the karsts, with e-bikes to Hang Mua, a rowboat through Tam Coc and an afternoon game. Every trip is private and starts on the dates you choose.
See the Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Ha Long tripWhen is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?
March to April and September to November have the best weather, mild and mostly dry. For the famous golden rice at Tam Coc, go in late May or the first days of June, before the harvest.
- December to February: cool, often grey, 14 to 20°C. Good for walking and playing, less good for photos. See Vietnam in December.
- Mid-February to March: the Bai Dinh and Trang An festival season after Tet, with crowds of Vietnamese pilgrims. See Vietnam in March.
- Late May to early June: golden rice and lotus season, but already hot, 30°C and up.
- June to August: hot and humid with storms. Play and sightsee before 10am.
- September to November: clear days and fewer visitors. Our favourite time.
Avoid weekends and Vietnamese holidays (30 April to 1 May, and 2 September) if you can; the boat queues double. Our best time to visit Vietnam guide covers the rest of the country month by month.
How many days do you need, and where should you stay?
Stay two nights, in Tam Coc for rice-field views and cafes, near Trang An for quiet, or in Ninh Binh city to be close to the station and the courts. One night is possible but rushed; three nights lets you add Cuc Phuong or Van Long without hurrying.
| Base | Good for | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Tam Coc | Homestays in the rice fields, walkable cafes, bicycles | The main street is touristy |
| Near Trang An | Quiet resorts and homestays between the karsts | You need a car or bike for dinner |
| Ninh Binh city | Train station, local courts, cheaper hotels | A town, not the countryside |
A two-day plan
Day one: arrive by mid-morning, lunch, bicycles around Tam Coc in the afternoon, then Hang Mua for sunset and dinner in Tam Coc.
Day two: pickleball at 6am, Trang An by boat at 8:30, lunch, Hoa Lu ancient capital, then the old town and a lantern boat in the evening.
Day three (optional): Bai Dinh or Van Long in the morning before you leave for Ha Long Bay, Pu Luong or the night train south.
Ninh Binh fits neatly into a longer route: our northern Vietnam itinerary and two weeks in Vietnam both include it, and Ha Long Bay is about three and a half hours away by road. The Valleys to the Bay trip links Ninh Binh with Pu Luong and a night on Ha Long Bay.
Ninh Binh: FAQ
Is Ninh Binh worth visiting?
Yes. Ninh Binh has the same limestone karst scenery as Ha Long Bay, but on rivers and rice fields, and you see it from a rowboat. It is about 95 km south of Hanoi, cheap to visit, and two nights there is one of the most relaxing parts of a trip to northern Vietnam.
Trang An or Tam Coc: which boat trip is better?
Pick Trang An if you only do one. Its boat trip lasts 2 to 3 hours, passes through more caves and temples, and the river is wider and calmer. Tam Coc is shorter, about 1.5 to 2 hours, and best in late May and early June when the rice beside the river turns gold.
How much is the Trang An boat ticket in 2026?
300,000 dong per adult, about US$11.50, including the rowboat. Children from 1 m to 1.3 m pay 150,000 dong and children under 1 m go free. Each boat takes up to four or five people with a local rower. Prices are from the Trang An management board as of October 2026.
How many days do you need in Ninh Binh?
Two nights is right for most people. That gives you one full day for a boat trip and Hang Mua, and a second morning for Bai Dinh or Hoa Lu before you move on. A day trip from Hanoi works, but you spend four to five hours of it in a car or van. See Hanoi to Ninh Binh for every way to get there.
What is there to do in Ninh Binh at night?
Walk the Hoa Lu old town, which is free to enter, and take a lantern boat on Ky Lan Lake for 100,000 dong. In Tam Coc, the main street has cafes and small bars, and the rice fields are quiet and dark. Ninh Binh is not a nightlife town, which is part of its charm.
Can you play pickleball in Ninh Binh?
Yes. Ninh Binh city has local courts where play starts around 5am, and court hire is cheaper than in Hanoi. About 35 to 45 minutes north, Sun Sports City in Phu Ly opened in May 2026 with 41 covered pickleball courts. Play early, then do the boat trip before the day tours arrive.
The bottom line
Ninh Binh is two nights of rowboats, karst views and early games, about two hours from Hanoi, and most tickets cost under US$12. Book the Trang An boat for early morning, climb Hang Mua for sunset, keep the second day for Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh, and play before the heat. Read Hanoi to Ninh Binh to choose how to get there, and beyond Ha Long Bay for other quiet places in the north.
