Nha Trang Travel Guide 2026: Beaches, Mud Baths & Pickleball

Nha Trang gets dismissed a lot lately. "Too Chinese." "Too touristy." "The reef is gone." Some of that is true. The central strip has changed since the Russian charter flights stopped, and the coral took a hit in 2020 and 2023. But the beach is still 6 km of white sand and calm blue water, the mud baths are genuinely great, hotel prices are low because of the market shift, and the pickleball scene has grown faster here than almost anywhere else in Vietnam. This is the guide I give to visitors who want to see past the tour-group surface.

The short answer

Nha Trang is Vietnam's best beach city for a relaxed week. The bay is beautiful, the weather is reliable from January to August, and you can be somewhere quiet in 20 minutes from the city centre.

For locals' beaches, go north to Doc Let (50 km, 1 to 1.5 hours) or south to Bai Dai in Cam Ranh (20 km, 30 to 40 minutes). Both are white sand, clear water, almost no tour groups.

There are at least 6 pickleball courts in the city in 2026, the biggest being DSD Pickleball with 8 courts. Court fees run 80,000 to 230,000 VND per hour.

Avoid October to December, which is storm season. Best months: February to April.

What changed in Nha Trang in 2026?

A few things worth knowing before you arrive. Russian charter flights mostly didn't return after COVID, and a large chunk of the Russian-oriented businesses on the tourist strip have closed or pivoted. The city now runs heavily on Chinese and Korean group tourism, particularly charter flights from Chengdu, Kunming, and Seoul. That means the central strip feels different to how it did five years ago: more hotpot and Korean BBQ, more Chinese-language QR menus at restaurants.

The upside is real. 4-star hotels are discounting hard because there are more rooms than the market needs. Direct international flights now serve Cam Ranh Airport from Seoul, Busan, Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and a growing number of Chinese cities, which means easier connections for visitors from the US, UK and Australia via those hubs.

The coral reef at Hon Mun Marine Protected Area is slowly recovering after the 2022 temporary closure and tighter visitor caps, but it hasn't returned to pre-2020 condition. If snorkelling the reef is a priority, set expectations accordingly and choose an operator who pays the 22,000 VND marine park fee.

The beaches locals actually go to

The main beach on Tran Phu Street is fine, and the promenade is genuinely pleasant at 6am before the sun gets serious. But if you ask a local where they go on a weekend, they don't say Tran Phu. Here are the beaches that locals actually drive to.

Hon Chong Beach: the easiest escape in the city

About 3 km north of the main strip, Hon Chong is calmer, less crowded, and framed by the distinctive granite rock formations of Hon Chong and Hon Vo. Sun loungers are around 50,000 VND. The rock platform is worth a walk at low tide, especially on the 13th to 15th of the lunar month when locals gather shells. The small cafe perched above the rocks here has one of the best views in Nha Trang for sunrise or sunset, for roughly the price of a Vietnamese iced coffee.

Bai Dai, Cam Ranh: the closest long beach

Twenty kilometres south, about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi. Thirteen kilometres of coastline with gentle slopes into calm water, and almost no tour groups on weekdays. Locals arrive early to swim before the afternoon wind picks up. Take Bus 18 from the city centre (20,000 to 50,000 VND) along the coastal Nguyen Tat Thanh road, which is scenic in itself. Carry cash, bring sunscreen, and arrange your return in advance because ride apps don't reliably cover the beach area. April to June is the best season for calm water.

Doc Let, Ninh Hoa: the locals' favourite day trip

This is the one. About 50 km north of Nha Trang, 1 to 1.5 hours by motorbike or private car. Six kilometres of fine white sand, water so shallow you can wade out 50 metres and still stand, and almost no international tour groups because it's awkward to get to on a bus. Locals know this place, which is exactly why it's worth the trip.

The drive up is part of the day. On the way you pass the Hon Khoi salt fields, around 400 hectares of evaporation ponds that turn pink and white in the early morning light. The Hon Heo peninsula south of Doc Let has fishing villages and a rough-road loop to Ganh Nhay Beach (entrance around 50,000 VND per person). Sand dunes back from the shore can be sledded for a small fee.

There's almost no English outside the few beach resorts, so bring a translation app, pay in cash, and go early. The best months are April to August. Avoid October to December entirely.

Mud baths in Nha Trang: which one is worth it?

Nha Trang is the only city in Vietnam where soaking in hot mineral mud is a normal afternoon plan, and it's exactly as good as it sounds. You sit in a private tub (or share a large pool) of warm, thick, mineral-rich mud for 20 to 30 minutes, rinse off, then move to a warm mineral pool. It's genuinely relaxing, and oddly social. Three main options in 2026:

My recommendation: I-Resort if you have half a day and want to use the full water park. Thap Ba if you want the cheapest ticket and don't care about bells and whistles. Galina if atmosphere matters more than price. Book the morning session (9 to 11am) before the crowds arrive from the tour buses.

The mud bath is not optional on a Nha Trang trip. Even people who were skeptical come out saying it's one of the best things they did in Vietnam.

Top 8 things to do in Nha Trang beyond the beach

  1. Soak in a mud bath at I-Resort or Thap Ba. Book morning sessions before the big tour buses turn up.
  2. Visit Po Nagar Cham Towers early morning, before it gets hot. Seventh to thirteenth century, still actively used as a place of worship. Ticket 30,000 VND.
  3. Take the cable car to Hon Tre Island for VinWonders. The cable car is 12 minutes across the bay. Even if amusement parks aren't your thing, the ride and the Vinpearl Harbour area (free to walk around) are worth it for the view.
  4. Drive north to Doc Let for a half-day or full day. Rent a motorbike (around 200,000 VND/day from Easy Rider or similar shops) and stop at the salt fields on the way.
  5. Play pickleball with locals. The courts fill up fast in the evening. DSD Pickleball in Vinh Thai is the biggest club in the city. More on all 8 courts below.
  6. Snorkel at Hon Mun. The reef is recovering. Pay the marine park fee (22,000 VND), choose an operator who does, and go early.
  7. Walk the Ba Ho Waterfall trail, about 25 km northwest of the city. Three tiers, a jungle trail, natural pools. Morning is cooler and less busy.
  8. Spend an hour at the Alexandre Yersin Museum. Yersin was a Swiss-French doctor who discovered the plague bacillus and spent decades in Vietnam. The museum on Tran Phu Street is quiet, unusual, and genuinely interesting. Ticket 20,000 VND.

5. Sân Pickleball Phú Nông

Address: 76 Phú Nông, Vĩnh Ngọc. North of the centre, a bit of a local neighbourhood feel. Popular with the Vietnamese morning crowd who play from 6 to 8am before work.

Top 8 cafes in Nha Trang worth finding

Nha Trang's cafe culture is strong. The best ones are in side streets and old villas, not on the main tourist strip. These are worth going out of your way for.

1. Sailing Club

72–74 Tran Phu, Loc Tho. Open-air bar and cafe right on the beach with a direct sea view. Best at sunset. Open until 2am, which makes it the natural end of a day at the beach. The only beachfront cafe with this kind of space and atmosphere.

2. Quán Cafe Hòn Chồng

Dốc Hòn Chồng, Phạm Văn Đồng. Perched on the slope above the Hon Chong rock formations. Locals come here specifically for sunrise and sunset views. Inexpensive. One of the few places in the city where the view is the whole point, not the Instagram setup.

3. Trốn Cafe

Villa 23, hẻm 86C, Tran Phu. A converted villa in a quiet lane just off the main beach road. Old-fashioned furniture, slow pace, the kind of place you stay for two hours without meaning to. Good for a late morning after the beach.

4. Rainforest Cafe

146 Võ Trứ. Designed to feel like a small jungle, which sounds gimmicky but it works. Lots of greenery, unusual decor, and the drinks are actually good. Popular with locals on weekends.

5. Paramount Cafe

58 Tran Phu. Spacious, airy, on the main beachside road. Open from 5:30am, which makes it the right choice for coffee before a morning pickleball game or a beach walk. Light food menu too.

6. City Fox Cafe

27 Lê Quý Đôn. Warm, minimalist tones, good light, and enough photo corners to satisfy anyone who needs to photograph their coffee. Open until 9:30pm.

7. Tiệm Cà Phê

30/17 Đoàn Trần Nghiệp. Tucked into a tiny alley with yellow walls that evoke Hoi An's old town. Very photogenic and very cheap. One of the spots that regular visitors to Nha Trang return to specifically.

8. Alpaca Coffee

10/1B Nguyễn Thiện Thuật. Small, white-toned, with drinks made fresh on-site by a friendly Russian owner who stayed after the charter flights stopped. Good for a slow afternoon. Open 8am to 9:30pm.

Getting around Nha Trang

The city is flat and the main strip is walkable, but anything beyond Hon Chong or Diamond Bay needs wheels. Green SM (the electric ride-hailing app, formerly Xanh SM) is the best app for in-city rides. The fare shows before you confirm, the cars are new and air-conditioned, and the drivers often call a minute before arrival to confirm where you are. Read the Green SM guide if you haven't set it up yet.

For a day trip to Doc Let or Bai Dai, rent a motorbike (around 200,000 VND/day, passport or deposit required) or book a private car for the day. Grab also works for shorter city trips if you already have it set up.

From Cam Ranh Airport to central Nha Trang is about 45 to 50 minutes by taxi. The Airport Bus 16-2 runs to Vinpearl and the city centre for 50,000 VND, every 15 to 20 minutes from 05:00 to 23:00. Don't accept a ride from anyone in the arrivals hall without checking the metre or booking through an app first.

When is the best time to visit Nha Trang?

Nha Trang's dry season runs from January to August, with February to April the most reliable stretch: clear skies, water temperature around 26 to 27°C, less crowded than the school holiday peaks. May to August is hotter (30 to 34°C) and busier, but still a good time to visit.

September to December is monsoon season in Nha Trang, which is different from the south of Vietnam where it rains and clears quickly. In Nha Trang, October and November see sustained heavy rains, rough seas, and occasional typhoon activity. I don't recommend this window for a beach trip.

The Tet holiday (late January or February depending on the lunar calendar) brings Vietnamese domestic tourism and inflated hotel prices. Book well ahead or avoid that week.

Nha Trang travel guide 2026: FAQ

Is Nha Trang worth visiting in 2026?

Yes, with the right expectations. The beach is genuinely beautiful, hotel prices are good right now because the Russian market collapsed, and the pickleball scene has grown fast. The central tourist strip is busy and Chinese-group-focused, but 20 minutes in any direction gets you somewhere much quieter.

What is the best beach near Nha Trang for locals?

Doc Let, about 50 km north (1 to 1.5 hours). Six km of white sand, shallow water, almost no tour groups. Bai Dai in Cam Ranh, 20 km south, is calmer and closer. Hon Chong Beach is good if you want to stay in the city but avoid the main tourist stretch.

Which mud bath in Nha Trang is best?

I-Resort is the most complete, with the biggest facilities, a family area and water park zones, from 170,000 VND. Thap Ba is the original and most affordable, from 120,000 VND. Galina is the most designed, with a cave-spa atmosphere and a beachside setting, from 350,000 VND. Book the morning session at any of them.

Can I play pickleball in Nha Trang?

Yes. There are at least 6 established courts in the city in 2026, ranging from 80,000 to 230,000 VND per hour. DSD Pickleball in Vinh Thai has 8 courts and an active community. Courts fill up fast in the evening, so aim for a morning game or book ahead.

What is the best time to visit Nha Trang?

January to August, with February to April the sweet spot: dry, clear, not too hot yet. Avoid October to December, which is storm and rain season. Tet (late January or February) is crowded and expensive.

How far is Nha Trang from Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City?

Nha Trang to Hoi An is about 530 km. Fly Vietnam Airlines: roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, from about US$25 to $60. Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh City is about 450 km. Fly: roughly 1 hour 10 minutes. Driving or taking a sleeper bus is possible but takes 8 to 10 hours. I recommend flying for either leg.

The bottom line

Nha Trang is not the Nha Trang of 2015, and in some ways that's fine. The reef needs time. The Russian restaurants are gone. The tour buses are Chinese and Korean. But the bay is still beautiful, the mud baths are still one of the best afternoon experiences in Vietnam, and the pickleball scene is genuinely exciting right now. Go in February or March, book a hotel inland for better value, get a motorbike one day and go north to Doc Let, and spend at least one evening watching the sun go down from Cafe Hon Chong with a Vietnamese iced coffee. That's a good trip.
