There is no single best month to visit Vietnam — and anyone who gives you one is guessing. The country runs over 1,600 km north to south, so it has three different climates at once. On the same trip you might want a light jacket in Hanoi while Saigon is warm and bright. Here's how to time it right, region by region.
The short version
Overall sweet spot: March to April gives good weather across all three regions at once — ideal for a multi-region trip.
North (Hanoi, Ha Long): best in March–April and September–November.
Central (Da Nang, Hoi An): best February to August. Avoid September–December (rain and typhoons).
South (Saigon, Mekong): dry season November to April.
Why Vietnam has no single "best time"
Most countries have one weather pattern. Vietnam has three. The north has four seasons including a genuinely cool winter; the central coast has its own rainy season that runs opposite to the north; and the south is tropical — just wet or dry. So the real question isn't "when should I visit Vietnam" — it's "where am I going, and when is that region at its best."
Northern Vietnam — Hanoi & Ha Long Bay
The north is the only region with a real winter. From November to February it's cool and dry — you'll want a light jacket in Hanoi, and the far-north mountains like Sapa can drop near freezing at night. May to August is hot and humid with summer rain.
The best months for the north are March–April and September–November: mild, clear, and comfortable for walking Hanoi's Old Quarter or cruising Ha Long Bay — and cool enough for good morning play.
Central Vietnam — Da Nang & Hoi An
This is the region that surprises people, because its rainy season is flipped. The central coast is hot and dry from roughly February to August — perfect beach-and-courts weather. But from September to December it enters its rainy season, with heavy rain and the occasional typhoon, worst in October and November.
So if your heart is set on Da Nang beaches and Hoi An lanterns, aim for the February–August window and avoid late in the year.
Southern Vietnam — Saigon & the Mekong
The south is tropical and warm all year, split into just two seasons. The dry season runs November to April — lower humidity, blue skies, the most comfortable window for Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. The wet season (May–October) brings short, heavy afternoon showers rather than all-day rain, so it rarely wrecks a trip.
So when should YOU come?
If you only visit one region, match your dates to that region above. If you want to see the whole country in one trip, the golden window is March to April — the rare stretch when north, centre and south are all pleasant together. October to April is the broad comfortable season nationwide; the central coast is the exception, peaking March to August.
One more thing worth knowing: Tet (Lunar New Year), usually in late January or February, is Vietnam's biggest festival. It's a wonderful time to be here, but many shops close, transport books out, and prices rise — plan around it.
