May is the month for Vietnam's central coast. Hoi An, Da Nang and Nha Trang are dry, sunny and calm, while Hanoi turns hot and Saigon starts its rainy season around mid-month, usually as one short afternoon storm. Is May a good time to visit Vietnam?
Yes, if you build the trip around the central coast. May is one of the best months of the year for Hoi An, Da Nang, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang, and a quieter, cheaper month everywhere once the 30 April holiday is over.
The catch is heat at both ends. Hanoi is hot and sticky by late May, and Saigon swaps its dry heat for humid days and afternoon storms. Neither is a reason to skip them, but it is a reason to keep them short and to do things early. If you'd rather have all three regions comfortable at once, April or March is the better month.

Is May a good month for Hoi An, Da Nang and Nha Trang?
It's close to perfect. The central coast is in the middle of its dry season, with sunny days around 25 to 33°C, flat sea at about 28°C and almost no rain until September.
This is the month to give the beach the most nights. Swim at My Khe or An Bang at 6am, walk Hoi An's old town after dark, and take a day for Hue. Hoi An's lantern night falls on Wednesday 19 May 2027; every date is in our lantern festival guide. Da Nang's fireworks festival opened on 30 May in 2026. The 2027 dates hadn't been announced as of October 2026, so check the official DIFF site if your trip runs into June.
What is the weather like in Hanoi and the north in May?
Hot and humid in Hanoi, around 24 to 32°C, with the first summer thunderstorms. Ha Long Bay is warm enough to swim, and the mountains around Sapa turn green as the terraces fill with water for planting.
Plan Hanoi the way locals live it: out at dawn around Hoan Kiem Lake, a long lunch indoors, back out after 5pm when the streets fill up. Two days is plenty. The mountains are the surprise. In late May, farmers flood the terraces around Sapa before planting, and around Mu Cang Chai the water season usually runs from mid-May to June, when the terraces reflect the sky like mirrors. Does it rain in Saigon and the south in May?
Yes, from around mid-May. The rainy season usually arrives as one heavy storm of an hour or so in the afternoon, with clear, hot mornings, so you lose an hour, not a day.
Early May is still dry and very hot, around 34°C. By the end of the month the afternoons cloud over and the downpour clears the air for the evening. Do the city and the Cu Chi tunnels in the morning, rest after lunch, and keep a poncho in your bag. Phu Quoc is the one place to time carefully. Early May is still good, but the southwest monsoon brings rougher sea and more rain to the west-coast beaches from late May. If you want an island late in the month, Nha Trang or Quy Nhon is the safer bet. Things to do in Phu Quoc covers the island.

May 2027 opens with the end of the Reunification Day and Labour Day break, expected to run to Monday 3 May. Later in the month, Buddha's birthday on Thursday 20 May fills the pagodas but isn't a day off.

Vesak is worked out from the lunar calendar: the fourth lunar month of 2027 starts on 6 May, so its 15th day is Thursday 20 May. The 2027 public holiday schedule hadn't been published as of October 2026, so treat the 3 May day off as expected, not final.
Late May is also the start of lychee season in the north. The early lychee from Thanh Ha arrives first, and the main crop from Luc Ngan follows in June. You'll see it piled on bicycles all over Hanoi.
Is Vietnam crowded or expensive in May?
No. Once the 30 April break ends on 3 May, May is low season for foreign visitors, with lower hotel prices and quiet sights until Vietnamese school holidays begin at the end of the month.

Where can you play pickleball in Vietnam in May?
Play early everywhere: 5:30 to 8am outdoors, or under a roof later in the day. Hanoi and Saigon have plenty of covered courts, and in Saigon the afternoon storms make an evening game under lights the other good slot.
