Pick Hanoi for history, street food and a cooler, more traditional Vietnam. Pick Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) for modern energy, warm winters and easy day trips. They are about two hours apart by air, and both have good pickleball. Here is how they compare on weather, cost, food and courts.
The short answer
Choose Hanoi for the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, pho and bun cha, and a trip in autumn or April. It is also a little cheaper.
Choose Saigon for a December to March trip, French colonial streets, Ben Thanh Market, the Cu Chi tunnels and Mekong Delta day trips.
Weather is the real decider. Hanoi has four seasons and can be cold in winter and very hot in summer. Saigon has two, dry from December to April and wet from May to November.
Pickleball: Both cities have deep scenes. I would not choose between them on courts.

Which is better for a first-time visitor?
Hanoi suits people who want to feel history. Saigon suits people who want an easy, energetic city. Neither is the wrong choice, but they are different trips.
Hanoi is built around the Old Quarter's 36 streets, Hoan Kiem Lake, the Temple of Literature and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. It rewards slow walking, and it is where I would send anyone who wants old Vietnam. My Hanoi Old Quarter guide covers where to walk and eat.
Saigon is bigger and more modern. District 1 has the colonial architecture, Ben Thanh Market and the Notre-Dame Basilica, and the city is the base for the Cu Chi tunnels and the Mekong Delta. The things to do in Ho Chi Minh City guide has the full list.
What is the weather like in Hanoi and Saigon?
Hanoi has four seasons and Saigon has two, so the weather often decides the city. The ranges below come from one climate guide, so the two cities compare like for like. Check a forecast close to your dates.
| Season | Hanoi | Ho Chi Minh City |
|---|---|---|
| December to February | 10 to 20°C (50 to 68°F), often overcast, nights near 10 to 14°C (50 to 57°F) | Dry season, 27 to 34°C (81 to 93°F), sunny, low humidity |
| March to April | 18 to 26°C (64 to 79°F), humid and drizzly | Dry season ends, hot, about 30°C (86°F) in April |
| May to August | 30 to 38°C (86 to 100°F), hot, humid, wettest in July and August | Wet season, 24 to 33°C (75 to 91°F), afternoon downpours |
| September to November | 22 to 28°C (72 to 82°F), cooler and clear | Wet season continues to November, afternoon storms |
The practical point is that November is the one month that suits both cities. After that, Saigon has the better winter and Hanoi has the better autumn. For more on the seasons, see my best time to visit Vietnam guide.
Which city has better food?
Hanoi is the home of pho and the north's best dishes, and Saigon has the wider mix. In Hanoi, look for pho, bun cha (grilled pork with noodles) and cha ca (fish with dill). Saigon is where I would order broken rice, com tam, and eat in the alley cafes of District 1 and District 3. Both cities reward eating where locals eat. The what to eat in Vietnam guide goes further.
Which is cheaper, Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?
Hanoi is cheaper, though neither is expensive. A ShopBack travel guide puts mid-range hotels at about $45 to $90 a night in Hanoi and $55 to $105 in Ho Chi Minh City. It puts a mid-range day, with food, transport and sights, at $85 to $140 in Hanoi and $100 to $160 in Saigon, and calls Saigon the most expensive of the three cities it covers, especially in District 1. These are one outlet's estimates, so use them as a guide.
How do the two cities compare for pickleball?
Both have strong scenes, so pickleball should not decide this. Hanoi's courts are spread across districts, from Ba Dinh to Cau Giay and Ha Dong, and rent for roughly 80,000 to 250,000 VND ($3 to $10) an hour per court, usually split four ways. The city hosted its first pro stop, the MB Hanoi Cup, in April 2026. See where to play in Hanoi.
Saigon has the larger scene, with clubs in Thao Dien, Thu Duc, District 2, District 7 and a rooftop court at a District 1 hotel, at roughly 100,000 to 200,000 VND ($4 to $8) per session. It hosted the MB Ho Chi Minh City Open in August 2026. See where to play in Ho Chi Minh City. Whichever you choose, play early morning or late afternoon, not at midday.

Plan a private trip See Saigon and the MekongHow do you get between Hanoi and Saigon?
Fly. It takes about two hours. Vietnam Airlines lists an average direct flight of 2 hours 5 minutes on its Saigon to Hanoi page, with 20 to 25 flights a day. The same page shows one-way fares starting somewhere between about 800,000 and 1,550,000 VND (roughly $32 to $62), though it lists several different figures, so check live prices. Overland takes more than a day, which is not worth it on a short trip.
So which one should you choose?
Choose by season first, then by what you want to see. Here is how I would decide.
- Travelling September to November or in April? Choose Hanoi.
- Travelling December to March? Choose Saigon.
- Want history, old streets and a slower pace? Choose Hanoi.
- Want modern energy, rooftop bars and Mekong day trips? Choose Saigon.
- Have a week or more? Do both, with a flight between them. ShopBack's guide suggests 3 to 4 nights in Hanoi and 2 to 3 in Saigon, and I agree.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City better for a first trip to Vietnam?
If you only have time for one, I would pick Hanoi for its history, food and walkable Old Quarter. Pick Saigon if you are travelling between December and March, or want modern energy and easy day trips to the Mekong Delta and Cu Chi. Both work well for pickleball.
When is the best time to visit Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?
Hanoi is best in autumn, September to November, and in April, when it is mild. Saigon is best in the dry season from December to March. November works for both. Avoid Hanoi in June and July, when it can hit 35 to 38°C (95 to 100°F), and Saigon in its wet peak.
How far apart are Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?
They are about two hours apart by air. Vietnam Airlines lists an average flight time of about 2 hours 5 minutes, with 20 or more flights a day, roughly one an hour. A sleeper bus or train takes far longer, so for a short trip I always suggest flying.
Which city is cheaper, Hanoi or Saigon?
Hanoi is cheaper. A ShopBack travel guide puts mid-range hotels at $45 to $90 a night in Hanoi against $55 to $105 in Ho Chi Minh City, and a mid-range day at $85 to $140 against $100 to $160. Treat these as rough, and check current prices.
Can I play pickleball in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?
Yes. Both have many clubs that welcome visitors, and both hosted PPA Tour Asia events in 2026. Courts cost roughly $3 to $10 an hour in Hanoi and $4 to $8 a session in Saigon. Morning play avoids the heat in both. Our city guides list specific clubs.
The bottom line
Go to Hanoi for history and a cooler autumn, and to Saigon for a warm winter and modern energy. If you have a week, do both and fly between them. Either way, pack your paddle, because both cities will give you a game.
