The taxi scam at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi is real, it's well organised, and it usually starts the moment you walk out of arrivals looking for a ride. I'm Kevin. My Vietnamese name is Cuong, and I spent more than ten years as a tour guide in Vietnam, meeting travellers at Noi Bai almost every week. I've seen this scam from the inside: the people who run it, how they find you, and what happens when you get in the car. This is the raw version that most travel sites won't give you, and the simple ways to avoid it.
The short version
What is the Noi Bai taxi scam? Unlicensed drivers approach new arrivals inside or just outside the terminal, often pretending to be Grab drivers, then charge two to three times the real fare to central Hanoi.
What should it cost? Noi Bai to the Old Quarter is about 27 km. A Grab or Xanh SM car usually costs around 280,000 to 400,000 dong (about US$11 to US$16), plus a small toll.
How to avoid it: never accept a ride from someone who walks up to you. Book in the app yourself, use the official taxi queue, or arrange a pickup before you fly.
Are you in danger? No. These drivers are after your money, not you. Vietnam is a very safe country for travellers.
Why is there a taxi scam at Noi Bai Airport?
Because a tired traveller who has just landed is the easiest customer in the world. You don't know the prices yet, you don't have a SIM card, you don't have any Vietnamese dong, and you just want to get to your hotel. The scammers know all of that.
Noi Bai is also a long way from the city. The ride into Hanoi is about 27 km, so the fare is one of the biggest a driver can earn in a single trip. When something is worth that much money, someone will always try to take more than their share.
Who are the scam drivers?
They are not the official airport taxis, and they are not real Grab drivers. Most are local men and women from the districts around the airport who drive their own private cars. They work without a licence to pick up passengers, and many work in small teams: one person finds you in the terminal, another drives the car.
In June 2025, Noi Bai airport police caught a married couple from Soc Son, the district next to the airport, who did exactly this to a Taiwanese tourist on his first trip to Vietnam. The man approached him inside the terminal while he was trying to book a Grab. He showed a Grab logo, promised a meter, and led him to a car in the car park. At the hotel on Hang Bong Street, the fake "app" showed 700,000 dong, and they added another 200,000 dong for "parking". The real fare was about 367,000 dong, including the toll. The tourist paid, took a photo of the number plate and emailed the airport. That photo is how they were caught.
How do they find you?
- They come to you. A real driver never walks into the terminal to look for passengers. If someone approaches you and asks "Taxi? Grab?", that's your sign.
- They pretend to be Grab. They wear a green jacket, show a Grab logo on their phone, or offer to "book it for you".
- They promise a meter or a cheap fixed price. The price changes once you're in the car, or at the end of the trip.
- They take you to the car park. Official taxis wait in the official queue. A private car in the car park is not a taxi.
What happens if you take a scam taxi?
You pay far too much for your ride from the airport to your hotel, usually two to three times the real fare. A trip that should cost 350,000 dong ends at 700,000, 900,000 or even more. There's always a reason: a parking fee, a toll, a "night price", luggage, an extra person.
They don't drop you at your hotel
This is the part almost nobody talks about, and it shows you how carefully they plan it. Scam drivers often won't stop right outside your hotel. They stop a few houses up or down the street and tell you it's "just there".
Why? Because almost every hotel in Hanoi has CCTV cameras facing the front door. If the driver stops outside, the camera records the car, the number plate and the moment you hand over the money. Hotel staff might also walk out and tell you the real price. A few doors away, there's no camera, no witness and no help. By the time you find the hotel and tell the receptionist what you paid, the car is gone.
But let me be clear about your safety
I want to say this plainly, because I don't want this article to scare you. These people are only after your money. In all my years of guiding, I've never known one of them to hurt a traveller. Once you're in Vietnam, your health and your life are very safe here. Vietnam has very little violent crime against visitors. The worst that will happen with a scam taxi is that you overpay and feel annoyed for a day. Our guide to whether Vietnam is safe goes into more detail.
What to do if it happens to you
- Take a photo of the number plate before you get out.
- Ask your hotel reception to help. Most will step in for you.
- Write to Noi Bai Airport and include the plate number, the time and the amount. That's how the 2025 case was solved.
How much does Grab or Xanh SM cost from Noi Bai Airport?
A Grab or Xanh SM car from Noi Bai to the Old Quarter usually costs around 280,000 to 400,000 dong, or about US$11 to US$16. The ride takes 35 to 50 minutes, longer in rush hour or rain.
- Grab and Xanh SM car (4 seats): around 280,000 to 400,000 dong.
- 7-seat car: a little more, useful if you have big bags or pickleball gear.
- Official metered airport taxi: around 300,000 to 450,000 dong.
- Toll: about 17,000 dong is usually added to the fare.
- Busy times: prices go up in the morning and evening rush, in the rain and late at night.
Xanh SM is a Vietnamese company with green electric cars. It works like Grab, and many locals now prefer it.
How to use the apps safely at Noi Bai
- Get online first. Connect to the free airport Wi-Fi, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Our Vietnam SIM and eSIM guide explains how.
- Book it yourself. Never let a stranger book a car for you on their phone.
- Walk to the pickup area. App cars don't stop at the arrivals door. Follow the signs to the ride-hailing pickup point in the car park, a few minutes' walk away.
- Check the plate. Only get in if the number plate matches the one in your app.
How much does a travel agent airport transfer cost?
A private transfer from Noi Bai to central Hanoi booked through a travel agent or hotel usually costs around US$15 to US$30 for a car with a driver, and more if a guide meets you. The price depends on the size of the car, the time of night and whether someone is waiting inside the terminal with your name on a sign.
It costs more than Grab, but you pay a fixed price before you fly, nobody can change it at the end, and someone is waiting for you when you walk out. After a long flight, many of my guests felt that was worth every dollar.
Airport pickup with Vietnam Pickleball Travel: how it works
When you book with us, a guide meets you at arrivals with a sign showing your name. Here's exactly what happens:
- Before you fly, we connect on WhatsApp.
- We send you a photo of your guide on WhatsApp, so you know exactly who to look for.
- When you land at Noi Bai, connect to the free airport Wi-Fi and check your messages. Your guide will already be there.
- Walk out of arrivals and look for your name on the sign. Your guide takes you straight to the car.
How much is an airport pickup with us?
Our airport pickup costs from US$35 for a private car and US$55 with a guide meeting you, and the same prices apply at every airport in Vietnam. Every price includes room for your luggage.
Driver only, no guide:
- 4 to 7-seat car, for 2 or 3 people: US$35
- 16-seat van, for 4 to 8 people: US$50
With a guide meeting you at arrivals:
- 4 to 7-seat car, for 2 or 3 people: US$55
- 16-seat van, for 4 to 8 people: US$80
You can find a cheaper ride, and I've told you exactly how above. We don't compete on price. We compete on your safety and on how your trip begins.
Why book your airport pickup with us?
- A real guide, not a stranger. You know your guide's name and face before you land, and you can message them directly.
- Licensed cars only. We book every car through a licensed transport company, and we work with them under a written contract. No private cars, no drivers picked up at the kerb.
- Everything on paper. You get the price, the pickup time and the car details in writing before you fly. The price you see is the price you pay.
- Someone to call. If your flight is delayed or anything goes wrong, you have a real person on WhatsApp, not an app.
- A local who knows Hanoi. On the way into the city, ask your guide anything: where to change money, how to get a SIM card, where to eat that night.
We care a lot about how your trip begins. I don't want a small thing like an airport taxi to spoil how you see Vietnam, because this country and its people are so much better than that first ride.
What is the Noi Bai fast track service?
Fast track is a meet-and-assist service that takes you through immigration without the long wait. Immigration queues at Noi Bai can take an hour or more when several international flights land at once.
With our fast track service, someone meets you as you come off the plane, at the end of the air bridge, or at the terminal entrance if your plane parks away from the building and you arrive by bus. They take you through the immigration process and you skip the queue.
- Noi Bai Airport, Hanoi: US$28 per person.
- Tan Son Nhat Airport, Ho Chi Minh City: US$38 per person.
It's especially worth it for older travellers, families with children and anyone arriving on a long-haul flight. Make sure your visa or e-visa is in order first. Our Vietnam e-visa guide explains what you need.
Is there a taxi scam at Tan Son Nhat Airport in Saigon?
Almost none, in my experience. The organised scam I've described at Noi Bai is much rarer at Tan Son Nhat. Saigon has a different problem: getting to your car.
If you book a service car in Saigon, the ones with yellow number plates, which are registered commercial vehicles, you often have to walk a long way from the terminal to the pickup point. Pickup areas are crowded and confusing. At the new domestic Terminal 3, which opened in 2025, passengers have complained about taking lifts down to a shared lower level where taxis, buses and app cars all queue together, and about waiting a long time for a driver to accept. With heavy bags, after a long flight, in 33°C heat, it's not much fun.
That's the reality of airport pickups in Vietnam. My advice is the same in both cities: book your pickup through us. I'll be honest with you. This scam involves things that are hard to talk about and hard to fix. We've complained many times, and the problem keeps coming back. So the simplest way to protect your first hour in Vietnam is to have someone you trust waiting for you.
