December splits Vietnam in two. The south is at its absolute best: dry, sunny and warm, with Phu Quoc's beaches in full season. The north turns cool and grey, and Hanoi faces its worst air of the year. In between, the centre slowly dries out after the autumn rains. Here's how December 2026 really plays out, where to spend Christmas and New Year, and what's different in Hanoi this year.
The short version
Best region: the south. Saigon, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc are dry and around 30 to 32°C, perfect beach and outdoor weather.
The north: cool, around 15 to 21°C in Hanoi, often grey. Lovely for walking and coffee, but pack layers and watch the air quality.
The centre: the rains ease through the month. By late December, Hoi An and Da Nang are pleasant again.
Christmas and New Year: big, cheerful and very crowded in Hanoi and Saigon. Book hotels and domestic flights early.
Pickleball: the south is outdoor heaven. In Hanoi, plan on indoor courts.
December at a glance, region by region
- North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh): dry but cool and often misty. Days around 18 to 21°C, nights 13 to 16°C.
- Mountains (Sapa, Ha Giang): cold. Nights can drop close to freezing during cold snaps, and frost sometimes coats the high peaks.
- Centre (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An): rain is still likely in the first half of the month, easing towards the end. Around 24 to 27°C.
- South (Saigon, Mekong): hot, dry and sunny. Rain is rare.
- Islands (Phu Quoc): peak beach weather begins, with calm seas and water around 28°C.

Hanoi in December 2026: what you need to know
It's cold, and locals bundle up
Hanoi's winter surprises people. Days are mild, but with the grey skies and damp air, 15°C feels colder than it sounds, and most hotels and cafes don't have heating. It's the best weather of the year for a steaming bowl of pho or a hot egg coffee, though. Bring a warm layer and a scarf.
The air is at its worst
December is Hanoi's worst month for air pollution. Cold, still air traps traffic fumes and construction dust near the ground. On 2 December 2025, the city's AQI hit 208, "very unhealthy". On 7 December it passed 230, and for a while Hanoi was the most polluted city in the world. Not every day is like that, and a windy or rainy spell clears it quickly. But plan for it:
- Check the IQAir app each morning, and move outdoor plans to cleaner days.
- Wear a KN95 or FFP2 mask outside on bad days.
- Choose a hotel with an air purifier in the room.
- Keep Hanoi to two or three nights, and spend the rest of the trip in the south.
The Old Quarter's weekend motorbike ban
Hanoi's pilot low-emission zone continues until the end of 2026. On 11 streets around Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter core, petrol motorbikes are banned from 6pm to midnight on Fridays and from 6am to midnight at weekends. Petrol GrabBikes can't use those streets at all, so be ready to walk a block for a pick-up, or use a Grab car or an electric Xanh SM. The city plans to widen the zone from 2027, so the rules may change in the new year.
Christmas in Vietnam
Christmas isn't a public holiday in Vietnam, but the cities celebrate it with real enthusiasm. It's a night out rather than a family day.
- Hanoi: the square outside St Joseph's Cathedral is packed on Christmas Eve, and Hang Ma street in the Old Quarter fills with decorations for sale. Midnight mass is standing room only, so arrive early or watch from the edge.
- Saigon: the Notre-Dame Cathedral has been under restoration for years. Much of the scaffolding came down in 2026, but the work continues, so expect the Christmas crowds outside rather than a finished building. The pink Tan Dinh Church is another favourite for Christmas photos.
- Hotels and restaurants in the big cities run Christmas dinners. Book early if you want a table on the 24th or 25th.
New Year's Eve 2026 in Vietnam
For the start of 2026, Hanoi held a countdown festival around Hoan Kiem Lake, with fireworks at five locations across the city. Saigon put on fireworks at six sites, including the Saigon River tunnel entrance and Thu Thiem's new city centre. Expect a similar show on 31 December 2026, though the exact sites are only confirmed in December.
- The crowds are huge. Streets around the lake and the river close to traffic from the evening. Watch from a hotel rooftop or a cafe balcony if you can.
- Getting home is slow. Grab prices surge and roads stay jammed until well after midnight. Stay within walking distance.

Sapa in December: cold and clear
Sapa is quiet and cold in December, with daytime temperatures in single figures to low teens, and colder at night. On clear days the views are sharp. During cold snaps, frost forms on the high ground around Fansipan, and people come up from the lowlands specifically to see it. Bring real winter clothes. The rice terraces are bare after the harvest, so this is a trip for mountain air and quiet, not green fields.
Central Vietnam: coming back to life
After the October and November rains, the central coast improves through December. The first half of the month can still be wet, and the 2025 floods lasted into early December in some provinces. By the second half, Hoi An and Da Nang are usually pleasant: mild, greener than usual, and quieter than in spring. The beaches start to come back towards the end of the month.
Hoi An's full moon lantern night falls on Tuesday 22 December 2026, a lovely evening to plan around. In Hue it stays damp and cool, so bring an umbrella. Our Da Nang & Hoi An trip works well from mid-December.
The south: December's star
December is when the south shines. Saigon is dry and bright, the Mekong Delta is green with the water slowly dropping, and Phu Quoc enters its best months, with calm, clear water on the west coast.
- The Techcombank Ho Chi Minh City International Marathon runs on Sunday 6 December 2026, starting at 3:30am in District 1. Roads close through the early morning.
- Prices rise at Christmas. Phu Quoc and the big beach resorts charge peak rates over Christmas and New Year. Book early.
- It's hot. 30 to 32°C every day. Do your walking early and late.
Playing pickleball in December
- Saigon and Phu Quoc: the best outdoor conditions of the year. Play at 6 or 7am before it gets hot. See where to play pickleball in Saigon.
- Hanoi: cold mornings and poor air on many days, so plan on indoor courts. Several hotels have indoor courts, and our list of resorts in Vietnam with pickleball courts includes them.
- Da Nang: mixed early in the month and better later. Covered courts are the safe bet.
A sensible December route
For December, weight the trip towards the south:
- Hanoi, 2 to 3 nights: short and sweet. Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and a food walk.
- Ha Long Bay, 1 night: cool, but calm and atmospheric.
- Hoi An or Da Nang, 3 nights: fly down in the second half of the month.
- Saigon and the Mekong, 3 nights.
- Phu Quoc, 3 to 4 nights: finish on the beach.

Hanoi is atmospheric and festive, especially at Christmas and New Year, but it's cold and the air is often poor, so keep your visit short and flexible. Book early for the holiday weeks, bring two wardrobes, and plan your games around the sun: outdoors in the south, indoors in the north.
