The drive
Short drive,
long walk
Tan Son Nhat (SGN) is one of the few big airports in Asia that sits right inside the city. District 1 is only 6 to 8 km away: 20 to 25 minutes outside rush hour, and 45 minutes to an hour from about 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm. International flights land at Terminal 2, and most domestic flights now use the new Terminal 3, which opened in 2025.
Scams are rare here, in my experience much rarer than at Noi Bai in Hanoi. Saigon has a different problem: getting to your car. App cars and service cars use pickup areas that can be a long, crowded walk from the terminal. At Terminal 3, passengers have complained about taking lifts down to a shared lower level where taxis, buses and app cars all queue together. With heavy bags, after a long flight, in 33°C heat, it's not much fun. I wrote more about it in our airport taxi guide.
District 1 is where most first-time visitors stay: Ben Thanh Market, Nguyen Hue walking street, the Opera House and the backpacker streets around Bui Vien are all within walking distance. Our guide to things to do in Ho Chi Minh City covers what to do once you're there.
